My mommy works on the computer and FaceTimes people. She is really good at her job. That’s how my first grader described what my job is in a recent school writing assignment. While I appreciated the complement, it made me realize just how hard it...

#Legal: Instagram Can Do Anything It Wants with Your Photos

In Law  •  by Siobhán Fitzpatrick, February 20, 2022

Have you read Instagram’s Terms of Use? Probably not. Don’t feel bad. A 2017 Deloitte survey found that 91% of people consent to terms of service without reading them. For people ages 18-34, that rate was even higher, 97% did so. Whether you...

Let Her Finish

In Work  •  by Siobhán Fitzpatrick, October 21, 2021

“As a woman, you can be a literal supreme court justice and still get shouted down like someone’s little sister isn’t exactly encouraging news.” Just ask Sonia Sotomayor. Manterrupting is the annoying tendency of men to talk over and interrupt women. One of...

Britney Spears Conservatorship Explained

In Law  •  by Siobhán Fitzpatrick, June 27, 2021

I almost crossed paths with Britney Spears on my honeymoon. My husband and I were hiking up the volcano on Nevis in the Caribbean, a hike that required a machete-wielding guide to break the path. As our guide happily slashed through the vegetation...

{microblog} It’s a “Trip” Not a “Vacation” if You Bring Your Kids

In Parenthood  •  by Siobhán Fitzpatrick, May 22, 2021

I’m spending a rainy Saturday afternoon planning our family summer vacation. Correction. The kids are going on vacation. I’m going on a trip. A journey to a place other than my house where I can still spend my days settling sister squabbles, preparing...

{microblog} The Outsourced Parent

In Parenthood  •  by Siobhán Fitzpatrick, April 27, 2021

I shocked some of my friends recently with a controversial parenting decision. No, it doesn’t involve one of my kids getting a tattoo. Drum roll…I’m paying someone to teach my 2 younger kids how to ride a bike. Judging by the reaction of...

Top 3 Legal Mistakes You are Making on Social Media

In Law  •  by Siobhán Fitzpatrick, February 8, 2021

As typos stand out to word nerds, legal mistakes stand out to lawyers. There’s not a meme funny enough to catch my eye the way a legal mistake does when I mindlessly scroll my social media feeds. My brain instantly begins drafting the...

Will the COVID-19 Vaccine be Mandatory?

In Law  •  by Siobhán Fitzpatrick, December 6, 2020

My biggest worry the last 9 months? My mom. She’d disinherit me if I revealed her actual age, so I’ll just say she is older than Dolly Parton, but younger than Betty White. Protecting Grandma has given my own little family a good...

My mommy works on the computer and FaceTimes peopl My mommy works on the computer and FaceTimes people. She is really good at her job.

That’s how my first grader described what my job is in a recent school writing assignment.

While I appreciated the complement, it made me realize just how hard it is to explain to my little girl what a lawyer is, especially one like me who doesn’t go to court. Her Fisher Price Little People Community Helpers set doesn’t include an in-house lawyer who drafts, reviews, and negotiates commercial contracts.

If you are a lawyer mom like me who wants her kids to know all of the amazing things lawyer moms do, check out My Mom is a Lawyer by fellow lawyer mom Vanessa Gerard. It’s available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

Lawyer moms, we’re all represented in the book. Prosecutors. Defense lawyers. Commercial litigators. Corporate lawyers. Real estate attorneys. Policy makers.

Thank you @bostonu Unleashed PR Club for the Mother's Day care package containing this wonderful book.

Whether it’s someone panhandling at an intersect Whether it’s someone panhandling at an intersection, sleeping under a freeway overpass, or walking around downtown with all of their possessions, our kids encounter homeless people all the time in Dallas.

And they ask hard questions.

Why is he sleeping there? Why doesn’t she have a home? Why doesn’t he have a family to take care of him?

You and your kids can make the shift from empathy to action by volunteering for one of the amazing organizations serving the homeless people of Dallas.

Starting the college application process with my oldest daughter has made me nostalgic for my college years.

One of my favorite college memories was meeting Ann Richards. Texas and feminist icon, her message of unity and inclusion is just as relevant today as it was in the 80s and 90s.

As can see by how close we are in the photo, she was extremely gracious to a stammering college kid thrilled to meet one of her idols.

If you had told my 10 year old self, the kid who would check out books 10 at a time from the library, that someday all of the books I owned would be on a device smaller than my Walkman (#80skid), my mind would have been completely blown.

No question, my most used gadget is my Kindle. If you want to read more, keep an e-reader with you and you can read whenever you have a few spare minutes.

If you have access to the @libby.app through your local library, you download checked out e-books onto your e-reader.
